Gloria’s Question…

Wow Gloria… this is some question! Lot’s of information and insight jammed into this one! Anyways, to answer the first question- I am going to take a trip down memory lane. In elementary school, computers were unheard of; I can’t even remember using the computer for an assignment or a report. Actually, I can recall the first time that I was on the Internet…it was after school one day, and I was at my best friend’s house fooling around in the chat rooms and prank calling people! However, high school assignments and reports were expected to be completed on the computer. There were also a few courses available to students… but it wasn’t mandatory.

It is evident that the students who are currently being taught have already had a very different experience with technology. In my grade ¾ classroom, students had unlimited access to various programs and games on the computer. We had computers right outside of our door- and there were always students using them. Additionally, students are encouraged to use the computer.

Moving on… in regards to the information that I would like to know about technology in my school division- I agree with Lindsay! Lindsay had some awesome comments and questions that I too was wondering about. However, a question that was not mentioned and I am curious about the answer is: What sort of training will be available to teachers? I think that it is extremely important for seminars and training sessions to be offered to teachers- especially if we are expected to incorporate technology into our classrooms.

The primary challenge for teachers and technology is to stay current and knowledgeable about the programs available to us. Our students will not benefit from technology if we don’t know how to use it.

All right then, I will see you folks tonight in class!

You ask a key question, Laura. What sort of training will be available to you as a teacher? It varies from school division to school division. By taking this course you might find yourself in a postion of offering a workshop to teachers! Right now the workshops for teachers are mainly after school and during professional development days. Some school divisions, like the one I work at, offer a Technology Mentorship Project and an online course dedicated to learning about educational technology.
